Gases can emanate from the ground due to water table movements that compress the air contained within the soil, organic matter fermentation and rising natural gasses.
When a landfill site or retention basin is built, an impermeable barrier must be created. This traps the ground gases which form bubbles in the membrane. This gas build-up can be avoided by installing a degassing strip beneath the membrane.
